What do we want?

Please send us two images, one with a positive representation of childhood/being a young person in your country and culture. The second one should be an image with a more negative representation. These could be photos that you take yourself or images from art or magazines etc. There is no need to ask us any questions about your choice of images, you are free in your interpretation.

We would like to know:

1. Why you chose the images 2. How old you are 3. Where you live (town and country) 4. Your nationality 5. If you are happy to be contacted by Stefan Kleipoedszus who is doing his PhD on this subject. (Stefan is looking for social pedagogues, residential child care workers or social workers working with children or young people, who can take pictures representing their work and be interviewed afterwards).

What will we do with it?

First and foremost this is for our interest. We want to see what differences we can see in the way children and young people are perceived and represented in different societies around the world from your photos. We will think about what implications this may have for how we work with children and young people.

We will use these photographs in our training work and we may create an exhibition with the images you send us. We will not display any personal information about you in this exhibition (e.g. name, age etc) only your country or residence, your nationality and the reason you selected the image. The images will not be used commercially.

The reasons for searching for a job in the UK vary amongst candidates. Some have already friends or family in the country or enjoyed previous stays in the UK and would like to move permanently. Better career opportunities were the decisive reason to make the step towards relocating for 24% of our placed candidates. Only 17% are already living in the UK at the point of their enquiry and a total of 61% had experiences living in a country different to their home country for a period longer than 3 months.

More than half of our placed candidates (55%) got their job offer no later than 3 months after their initial enquiry. This means that within a timeframe of 3 months, they had made initial contact with Jacaranda, had a telephone interview, sent an application and were invited to an interview that led to employment. ¾ of all placed candidates had found employment through us after 6 months. For 86% the first interview led to successful employment.

It seems that Britain is a stepping stone for newly qualified candidates: 53% of the candidates had less than two years of work experience, while 17% had already been working for more than 5 years in their field of qualification. Given the fact that 65% of our candidates came from Germany, where the average graduation age is higher than in other European countries you can see the correlation between age and years of experience: nearly half of the candidates were between 26 and 30 years old, 19% younger than 25 and 20% were older than 36 years old.

The high amount of German candidates is related to the recruitment of social pedagogues and pedagogues for the DCSF pilot project. The project is looking at the potential of social pedagogy within residential settings in England following a research from the Thomas Coram Research Unit. A survey showed that there are better outcomes for children in residential settings in Germany and Denmark than in England. Other candidates came from countries such as Portugal, Sweden, Romania, Spain, France or Austria.

Regarding qualification, we found out that a degree in Social Work was held by 48%. 18% graduated in Social Pedagogy (half of them with a double degree in Social Pedagogy/ Social Work), 30% had a pedagogical qualification and 5% were trained as educators. 31% of all placed candidates had applied or were already GSCC registered at their point of enquiry.
